November Newsletter

Fall is well underway and our November newsletter brings news of existing and new programs for career exploration, a new hire that will serve as a key resource for graduate students, and support for international students seeking external funding.
This week the 3rd Annual Graduate Career Diversity Symposium will be held on Wednesday, November 6 in the IMU. The theme is Working with Data, including using data in innovative ways in your research and future career, exploring resources to help identify a career path, and hearing from working professionals from a variety of background disciplines who have found careers in data collection and analysis. The program starts at 9 am in the Georgian Room. Even if you haven’t registered you are welcome to attend.
And it is not too early to begin thinking about participating in our annual Three Minute Thesis competition this spring, which is scheduled for February 28th. This year's competition will be bigger and more exciting than ever, so mark your calendar! Look for updates on our webpage and in next month’s newsletter, including details about the event and practice sessions.
Finding the appropriate office to help with redressing a grievance, an issue with an advisor, or problems with an assistantship, can be daunting. In response to the need to help students connect with available resources, an objective was included in the IUB 2030 Strategic Plan to establish the position of Graduate Student Ombudsperson. I am pleased to report that we have successfully created the position and, with the help of a search committee chaired by Prof. Sean Nicholson-Crotty, faculty in the O’Neill School and Director of the Graduate Mentoring Center, we have hired Carissa Ciampaglia, an experienced ombudsperson with formal training in conflict resolution. More details about the position and Carissa will be forthcoming in future newsletters, but we look forward to having her join us in the Graduate School at the beginning of the Spring 2025 semester.
The Grad Grants Center continues to offer one-to-one consulting services for identifying and applying for external fellowship opportunities. This month they are also holding a Grant Writing Workshop for International Students on November 20, from 2:00 – 3:30 pm to navigate funding systems in the US and provide information about funding opportunities.
Finally, as this Tuesday is election day, I would like to call your attention to the webpage of pre- and post-election resources and opportunities for conversation, created by the Office of Student Life.
Best,
David Daleke
