I trust that you had a good spring break and, if you were in Bloomington, had a chance to enjoy a taste of spring weather. The remainder of the spring semester will be busy with events and this newsletter will focus on just a few of them.
Continuing to Strengthen the Graduate Student Experience
The IUB 2030 plan and the preceding 2022 Task Force on the Future of Graduate Education called for a regular assessment of the overall graduate student experience at IU Bloomington. To address this goal, we joined gradSERU , a consortium of more than 25 institutions that use a survey instrument created by the University of California Berkeley and the University of Minnesota. Derived from an undergraduate survey of student experience at research universities (SERU), the gradSERU survey addresses all aspects of the graduate and professional student experience and will be used to improve graduate student training and services. All graduate and professional students are invited to participate. The survey will launch the week of March 25, so look for communications and the invitation by email.
Celebrating IU Graduate and Professional Students
April 1 - 5, 2024 is National Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week! This celebration acknowledges and thanks all graduate students for their current accomplishments and future contributions to our society. We are collating a list of events sponsored by campus units and will distribute them in the coming weeks by email and on our website.
Preparing for Solar Eclipse Events on Campus
Following that week is the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. As I am sure you know by now Bloomington is in the path of totality for this once-in-a-lifetime event. Thousands of visitors are expected in our area and IU has planned a number of programs to celebrate this celestial event. Be sure to visit eclipse.iu.edu for details and for advice on safely viewing the eclipse.
Assistance with Filing Tax Returns
April also brings the deadline for filing income tax returns, which can be complicated for graduate students, especially for those who are international students or are first-time filers. Fortunately, as you might have seen in a recent IU Bloomington Today, the Mauer School of Law Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free assistance, for residents and non-residents, through March 26th. A similar program for residents is offered by United Way of South Central Indiana. I encourage you to take advantage of these resources.
Sincerely,
David Daleke Dean, IUB Graduate School |
