Santosh Jain Endowed Memorial Scholarship

The Santosh Jain scholarship honors the memory of the spouse of Chaman Jain, a senior lecturer in SPEA. Santosh Jain was well known among international graduate students. She was born in Lahore, India, which is now part of Pakistan. She first came to the United States from New Delhi, India, in 1970 with her husband and their two small children in order for Chaman Jain to attend graduate school at IU. Throughout the years, she supported her family as they pursued higher education, and was passionate about serving her community and promoting education. She was a founding member of the India Society of Bloomington, a group dedicated to assisting impoverished women and children in India. She was also well known in the graduate student community for her culinary skills.

The scholarship offers financial support to a current international graduate student who has demonstrated commitment to service and education, plans to pursue a service-oriented career, and demonstrates financial need. The recipient will possess a track record of service to underserved or rural communities, humanitarian causes, or educational organizations in activities that support an improvement in the lives and opportunities to those in impoverished communities. Preference will be given to graduate students from South Asia, in particular those hailing from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bhutan.

Award This is a single-year award valued at $5,000 for the academic year. Note: The award must be used for the year it is awarded. A recipient cannot place this award into a reserve status because of receiving another award.

Nomination Process Any IU Bloomington department can nominate one doctoral or master’s student who exemplifies the characteristics of Santosh Jain.

Note: The nomination must be submitted by the department. We will not accept any student self-nominations.

Required Nomination Components

Submit the nomination form with the following components included:

1. Provide the nominee information
2. Upload 2 letters of recommendation
3. Upload a personal statement from the candidate (no longer than 2 pages in length)
4. Upload the nominee curriculum vitae or résumé
5. Enter the username of the department chairperson, or another faculty or staff member designated by the chairperson, who will confirm the nominated student is eligible and the Chair approves of the nomination. Please let them know that they will receive an email FROM IU Graduate School Bloomington with a SUBJECT line of Santosh Jain Endowed Memorial Fellowship requesting their approval and must complete the approval before the form will route to the Grad School.
