Program Dates: June 4-July 30, 2021
Application Deadline: February 15, 2021
The Indiana University STEM Summer Scholars Institute (STEM SSI) is an 8-week undergraduate research program designed to give motivated undergraduate students hands-on experience in graduate-level research. We welcome applicants from IU and Minority Serving Institution (MSI) partner institutions around the United States who are seriously considering joining a Ph.D. graduate program after completing their undergraduate degree. Students from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Scholars are hosted on two core Indiana University campuses.
The STEM SSI emphasizes direct laboratory experience. Students spend a majority of their time learning research techniques in the laboratory, attending lab meetings, interacting with members of other labs, and otherwise conducting themselves just as if they were in graduate school. Each student is mentored by a faculty mentor and solving real research problems in a research laboratory.
In addition to laboratory research, the program features:
- Weekly research seminars and roundtable discussions
- Academic and career-planning workshops
- GRE preparation
- Mock interviews for graduate school
- Saturday Excursions
- Closing symposia where the students present their research in oral presentations and a poster session
Students receive shared on-campus apartment accommodation, meals, and a competitive stipend.
The 2021 STEM SSI runs from June 4 through July 30, 2021. The application period is open until February 15, 2021.
