The Walter Jamieson Memorial Fellowship was created in honor of Walter Jamieson by Lynn Jamieson and Stephen Wolter. Walter Jamieson served the City of Paterson, New Jersey as an active and honored commissioner of the Paterson Park Commission for over 20 years. He demonstrated extraordinary commitment to city youth, youth at risk, and recreational sports as intervention and youth development.
The fellowship is an annual fellowship for a first-year master's level student in any graduate major on the Bloomington campus who has exhibited a service orientation with and dedication that involves youth engaged in community sports, the outdoors, and/or recreation and demonstrated academic achievement by achieving a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
The recipient could be a major in professional or non-professional areas that involve sports, outdoor recreation and/or public recreation, but could also include majors such as social work, public administration, liberal arts, or similar fields. Priority shall be given to a student whose primary interest and experience is in recreational sports, outdoor recreation, and/or public recreation.
This is a single-year award valued at $10,000 for the 2022-23 academic year. The fellowship is renewable for up to one year if the recipient continues to meet the Fellowship criteria. No recipient may receive the Fellowship for more than a total of two years.
