2022 IUB Three Minute Thesis Competition

Wednesday, January 05, 2022

Picture this: You've spent countless hours writing and rewriting your thesis or dissertation. You now have just three minutes to explain your work to a general audience. The payoff is the chance to win $500 cash and participate in a regional competition in March!

That's the idea behind the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. The University of Queensland (UQ) created the exercise in 2008 to test the presentation skills of graduate students by challenging them to present compelling orations about their thesis or dissertation research and its significance.

Indiana University Bloomington is a proud sponsor of the annual 3MT competition each spring, joining more than 900 universities worldwide hosting local 3MT events.

The first-place winner of the competition will receive $500 cash and advance to compete at the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) hosted in March. In the event the first-place winner is unable to compete at MAGS, the runner-up will be nominated to participate.

The second-place winner and the People's Choice recipient will receive $250.

2022 Virtual Competition Eligibility and Dates

Current IUB master's and doctoral students are eligible to participate in the competition. Presentations must be based on thesis or dissertation research or, in the case of non-thesis master's students, a culminating research project required by the student's program of study. Past IUB competition winners may not enter.

Competition Dates and Guidelines

The preliminary and final rounds of the 2022 Three Minute Thesis competition and awards ceremony will be hosted virtually.

February 17: Submit a recording of your Three Minute Thesis (Create your video in Kaltura and submit the Kaltura URL).

February 24: Attend the final round of competition and awards ceremony on Thursday, February 24, at 2 p.m. virtually. You can register for the Zoom room here. The awards ceremony is open to the public.
