Why did you choose graduate school at IU Bloomington?
I chose IU Bloomington to attend graduate school be cause I was able to relate to my advisor, Dr. Bill Ramos, mission, values, and goals of the School of Public Health (SPH). Knowing that the mission of SPH is "to promote health among individuals and communities in Indiana, the nation, and the world through integrated multidisciplinary approaches to research and creative activities, teaching, and community engagement", I recognized that this statement embodies my core personal and professional values to dismantling systemic racial and cultural barriers related to swimming. Indiana University - Bloomington has provided the intellectual stimulating environment I needed to further my educational and professional goals.
What's been your favorite academic accomplishment since you've been here?
My favorite accomplishment since I have been here was the acceptance of my first publication in a special edition of International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education. This article is the first of future pieces that will address the experience of marginalized voice within the swimming community. Being a former collegiate swimmer, USA swim coach, and my involvement with 2 non-profit organizations (Diversity In Aquatics and the International Water Safety Foundation) it is important to address the narrative of other black and brown bodies in swimming. My article can be found here: Quash, Tiffany Monique (2018) "Swimming Through the Waves: Black Collegiate Swimmers and Their Experiences," International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education: Vol. 11 : No. 1 , Article 6.
