Graduate Curriculum Development
Any new course proposed for graduate credit and any revision of a graduate-credit course, including course discontinuation, must go through the University Graduate School's remonstrance process. A course catalog is being kept for all IU courses.
- The University Graduate School's remonstrance list is published roughly every 30 days. It is sent to every member of the Indiana University Graduate Faculty.
- Remonstrance Lists. Current and recent lists of proposed graduate curriculum revisions.
- For more information, or to file a remonstrance, contact Jody Smith: josmith AT indiana.edu, (812) 855-4010.
- FAQ: Should my course request post to the University Graduate School's remonstrance list?
- Before they will finalize any course, Student Enrollment Services requires that the course have been circulated to all campuses with a 30-day period for comments.
- Any IU course counted toward a degree administered by the University Graduate School must be approved for graduate credit through the University Graduate School's remonstrance process.
- Courses proposed by professional schools (e.g., Kelley School of Business, School of Optometry) sometimes request both professional and graduate credit, in the case that a student might need to apply the course towards a degree administered by the University Graduate School. Such courses must therefore be approved through the University Graduate School's remonstrance process; indicate both "Graduate Credit" and "Professional Credit."
- Graduate-level courses that will apply to professional degrees only (e.g., MBA, JD, MD) need not post to the University Graduate School's remonstrance list. Such course requests should indicate "Professional Credit" only.
- Instructions and routing for course requests:
- If you are proposing a course to be offered on the Bloomington campus, you will submit course requests online:
- As Indiana University is still in the process of expanding the online system's availability, other campuses will continue to use the paper course-request forms.
- Basic flowchart for graduate-credit course requests:
- The Initiator prepares the request and syllabus
- The Department Chair approves the request
- The Dean of the School approves the request (some schools have a curriculum committee or remonstrance process of their own)
- Some campuses post the course to their own remonstrance list in addition to the University Graduate School's remonstrance list
- The request is sent to the University Graduate School and approved to appear on the remonstrance list by the Associate Dean of the Graduate School
- Once a course has been on the University Graduate School's remonstrance list for thirty (30) days, and if there are no objections raised by members of the IU graduate faculty, the course request is approved by the Associate Dean of the Graduate School
- The Associate Dean of the Faculties approves the request
- The course request is sent to Student Enrollment Services for scheduling
