  • Each oral session will include multiple presentations allotting a maximum of 15 minutes per presenter.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Abstracts will be judged along two major criteria – content and presentation.

Content should address:

  • What is the research about (major hypothesis to be tested, major experimental results to be performed)?
  • Why is it important?
  • What are the major results (data collected, proofs completed, experiments performed or set up)?
  • What are the current status and next steps?

Writing criteria include:

  • Is the writing clear? Can a reader with general scientific background understand the main point of the abstract and the importance?
  • Is the writing concise and to the point, summarizing rather than describing. Does it avoid phrases like “This abstract discusses …” and “Several solutions are considered …”?
  • Does the writing avoid jargon and acronyms that only others in the field would know?

The following Web Sites, although more about abstracts as part of complete papers, provide useful suggestions for writing abstracts.
