By far the easiest way to apply to graduate school is to fill out an online application. As you enter information, it will be saved as you go. You can check your admission status by creating an IU account at onestart.iu.edu.
Note: Decisions on admission to all graduate degree programs are made by the specific graduate program, which also has the responsibility for informing applicants of decisions. All inquiries should be addressed to the program to which the application is submitted. Contact information for departments may be found on our graduate degree programs list.
Important
- This application can be completed for both United States and Non-U.S. Citizens.
- For most programs, the application fee is $55 for domestic students and $65 for international students. (Please note that the masters programs offered through the Kelley School of Business operate on a different fee structure; see their website for more information. Note also that the Maurer School of Law charges a $65 fee to both domestic and international applicants.)
- The ONLINE application fee must be paid via credit card. Applications are not reviewed until the fee is paid.

Building Diversity
The University Graduate School participates in several programs designed to expand participation of underrepresented minority groups in graduate education. Prospective student applicants who have participated in any one of several IU summer research programs, are members of a professional organization such as SACNAS, AISES, ABRCMS, NPSC or AGEP, or who apply through programs such as Project 1000, McNair Scholars Program, (3) Committee for Institutional Cooperation (CIC), or National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) may be eligible for a waiver of the application fee.
To qualify, you must also meet the following criteria:
- Complete a bachelor's degree by the August preceding enrollment in the graduate program.
- Apply for admission to a Ph.D. program or Master of Fine Arts program.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale).
- Intend to pursue an academic and/or research career.
International Applications
International students may apply online just like domestic students.
To use a paper application . . .
International students who have not previously attended Indiana University and are applying by means of a paper application form to a program on the Bloomington campus are required to use special forms available from the Office of International Admissions.

Non-degree Applicants
